RN-Yuganskneftegaz for the First Time Applied Two-Column Drilling Technology in the Construction of a Fishbone Well

The specialists of RN-Yuganskneftegaz for the first time built a horizontal multilateral well of a two-column design with multiple branches using the fishbone technology. The total length of the well is 5,234 meters, the length of the horizontal section is 2161 meters. The starting flow rate amounted to more than 600 tons of oil, which is 80% more than the performance of nearby standard horizontal wells.

Building technological capacity is one of the key areas of the Rosneft-2022 strategy. The company is actively introducing advanced technologies in the field of geological exploration and drilling, which can effectively develop unconventional reserves.

The uniqueness of the drilled well lies in its technically complex two-column design. The technology allows to significantly increase the oil recovery coefficient due to the larger coverage area of ​​the reservoir, which gives a higher oil flow. 

A well with three branches was built in a short time – in 22 days. Drilling was carried out using rotary-controlled systems with logging. To maintain the stability of the borehole walls, a highly inhibited water-based drilling fluid was used, which significantly increased the economic efficiency of the project.
